Commentary

Fantasia in mode 4. A free, imitative fantasia of 76 compases divisible into 7 sections (see diagram). The analysis below sectionalises the work by its themes, although the piece flows through its entirety without any marked breaks. There is considerable variety in the treatment of each section. Somewhat similar to some of Mudarra’s short pieces. The work finishes on A = IV of mode.
Pujol’s transcription is poor. There are inaccuracies in compases 29, 32-33, 35-37, 50. Pujol’s commentary is also poor, including his assertion that theme 1 is derived from Conde Claros. This fantasia was transcribed into French tablature and reprinted as the opening piece in Phalèse, Hortus Musarum [Brown 1552/11; RISM1552/29], Nº 1.
