This song appears to be an arrangement of the four voice setting by Juan Vásquez known only from the version published in 1560, thirteen years later than the Valderrábano version in his Recopilación. It is probably based on an earlier version. Despite small differences, it is essentiall the same setting. Enrique comments: “In the first seven compases, Valderrábano makes some imitations on the soprano part (which commences alone in the Vasquez’s version), from then on, Valderrábano’s vocal part sings Vásquez’s tenor until compas 48, it is an exact transcription of the the polyphonic version. In compases 49-56, Valderráano not only varies the text ("no venis a la postura", Vásq: "Do venis la noche escura") but also the tenor melody and the remaining voices” then asks whether a previous version might have existed (enrique1988, 80). Pujol was evidently not able to make such a detailed comparison and concluded that Valderrábano may have transformed a polyphonic version into something more individaul (pujol1966, I, 49)
¿De donde venís amore?
Bien sé yo de dónde
Cavallero de mesura
No venís a la postura
Version from Vásquez Recopilación:
¿De dónde venís, amores?
Bien sé yo de dónde
Cavallero de mesura
Do venís la noche oscura
From whence do you come, love
Well do I know from where
Couteous gentleman,
Come not to this stance
