An anonymous castilian painting dated as the second half of the sixteenth century. Oil on wood. Fundación Simón Ruiz. Photos by Gracia Gil. Used with permission.
Instrument
Judging by its size and the join of the body and the neck, this instrument may be a guitarra (gittern) rather than a lute. This is also consistent with the eight pegs on the pegbox, also with a flat angled pegbox rather than the more usual right-angled channels typical of lutes. The decorations on the soundboard suggest it likely to be an instrument built in Spain.
