ARTWORK
A pair of angel vihuelists from the “Coronation of the Virgin with angel concert”, anon. (Ludovico Mazzolino or Michele Coltellini?). Painted between 1502 and 1505. Fresco, Santa Maria della Consolazione in Ferrara, apse. Godt (godt1989) reports that the fresco was commissioned by Ercole I d'Este and completed by 1505. Depicted accurately are a vihuela de mano, violone, viola da gamba with an endpin, lira da braccio, viola da braccio, harp, rebec, lute, tenor shawm, tambourine, and a still unsolved canon in the hands of a singer. Less accurately drawn are five more wind instruments and an imaginary “humanistic” instrument.
INSTRUMENT
Shoulder-held vihuela de arco, with cornered waists and c-holes, four strings (according to Godt) a raised fingerboard ending in a scroll fingerboard.
