ARTWORK
Angel con vihuela de mano. Polychrome relief on the dome of the presbytery of the Cathedral of Córdoba. Dome by Juan de Ochoa, c. 1600. Instrument from a photo by Carlos González that was included in his “Calendario de iconografía musical 2007”
INSTRUMENT
The vihuela has wasted sides, difficult to discern whether they are ntended to be cornered, and a fixed bridge which seems to have six courses/strings, but rhis is not consistent along the full length of the instrument. The neck is fretted and appears to terminate with an angled flat pegbox. The angel appears to be playing. It is not common to see the instrument being plucked so close to the fingerboard. It possibly resembles a strumming position.
