ARTWORK
Coronation of the Virgin, oil on wood (?) by Andrés López and Antonio de Vega, Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad, Plaza de la Trinidad, Segovia. 100 x 80 cm. Angel vihuelist, one of a group of angels surrounding the virgin in this account of the Coronation of the virgin. Probably painted around 1511 given that these painters painted the retablo of the familia Del Campo in 1511. corona2004-1 gives it as early 16th century.
INSTRUMENT
Six-course vihuela being played by one of a group of angels. The instrument has 6 single strings depicted, but 12[?] pegs of which 8 are clearly visible. Otherwise, the depiction captures many details with great precision such as the triangular slots in the bridge for attaching the strings. Above the vihuelist’s left hand, another of the angels handles a vihuela string, also held by the Christ child.
