ARTWORK
This print is used on fol. 5 of the Sebastián Fernández’s Tragedia Policiana. (Toledo: a costa de Diego López librero, 1547) The same print is used on the frontispiece to the 1547 edition of Diego de San Pedro, Cárcel de Amor. -- see 16-254. Two elegant gentlemen stand below a window serenading a lady; one plays a poorly drawn vihuela,
INSTRUMENT
The vihuela or guitar has slightly incurved sides, round soundhole, what appear to be taraceas in the soundboard, and flat bridge. The number of strings is hard to ascertain and is probably limited by the medium of woodcut print. The the pegbox is at a slight angle to the neck. The instrument was first mentioned by Ward (ward1953 15)
