Commentary

ARTWORK
King David is portrayed playing a vihuela de arco on fol. 70 of Cantoral 7 of Jaén Cathedral, dating from the 1st third of the 16th century. It is a detail from an initial letter, the work of the Maestro de la Vida de Jesús was active at the Cathedral of Jaén between 1523-1535.

INSTRUMENT
Large vihuela arco, with cornered waists, oval sound holes and a long neck. From the description by Alvarez (alvarez1982, 1085) the pegbox is “trilobulado” presumably like a fleur de lis.
