ARTWORK
Work of the “Martínez Master” or a follower, late 15th-early 16th century. Collection of D. Leandro Saralegui. Post speculates that the Martínez master might be Nicolás Falcó b ca.1475 and active 1502-1527. Style is very similar to the Perea Master.
INSTRUMENT
Vihuela with cornered waists. Short neck, circular pegbox with 4 pegs, and 4 strings. Fixed bridge very close to base. Carved rosette 3/4 distance from bottom. It is lying on the ground alongside a minstrel. The construction with a flat fixed bridge would suggest a plucked instrument, but the other features are more characteristic of a bowed vihuela. Instruments of this kind are less common by the early sixteenth century, thus suggesting that this instrument may have been copied from an earlier cartoon or exemplar.
