ARTWORK
Anonymous ‘Coronation of the Virgin’. Majorcan or Valencian School. Dated early 16th century. Woodfield gives the context of the painting. For a long time, the only image available of this instrument (such as the one repreoduced by Woodfield) was an old black and white print. The image here was supplied by the Museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia in 2020.
INSTRUMENT
This bowed vihuela has a small more or less oval body, small cornered waists, and a circular soundhole in middle of the body. It has 5 strings (or 4?) attached to flat bridge, therefore only able to allow all the strings to sound at once. The pegbox and pegs are not easily distinguishable in the photograph.
