Painted by Murillo c. 1660-1670. Oil on canvas 104.5 x 135.5 cm. Presented to the Gallery by Sir Alfred and Lady Beit, 1987 (Beit Collection) NGI.4542. The painting is reported by Gallego in bordas1985 as belonging to the Prado in Madrid.
INSTRUMENT
This painting includes a lutenist seated at the left of the table where the prodigal son is feasting with courtesans. It appears to be a seven or eight course lute judging by the width of the fingerboard. Other details are not very clear.
