ARTWORK
Angel musician playing the vihuela, one of the figures depicted on the Portal of the Church of Santa María de Requena (Valencia). c.1480. This portico was declared a National Monument in 1931. The façade depicts the Annunciation, as seen in the tympanum, a Madonna and Child in the mullion and 4 Archivolts: from outer to inner:
1) the outer the ogee arch on the outside
2) depictions of the virgin showing various attributes;
3) ten angel musicians each playing a different instrument;
4)and in the innermost, cherubs with wings folded and intertwined.
Numbering the angel musicians from left to right around arch no 3, the ones that are relevant here are nos. 3. vihuela de mano [15-350a] 6. lute [15-350b] 8. vihuela de mano [15-350c].
