ARTWORK
San Vicente / St. Vincent. Tempera on wood, 194 x 123 cm. Central panel of an alterpiece (retablo). The work is currently held in the Museo Diocesano in Lleida (Lérida), but originates from the parish church of San Vicente in Àger (Catalonia) -- this seems to be the Colegiata San Pere, the only chrch identified in Àger, Noguera. The work had been attributedto the “Maestro de Javierre” (active late 15th century-- early 16th century), so named because he is the painter of the retablo from the church of Javierre (Huesca). Recently it has been proposed Francesc Baget, the “Maestro de Ager”, of whom no works survive, but who was a student of Juan de la Abadía el Viejo. From its original location it was moved to the parish church of San José in Fondepou, and in 1929 in the Museo Diocesano in Solsona until being moved to its current location. INSTRUMENTS
The interesting aspect of this painting is the group of angel musicians surrounding St Vincent. They are playing (clockwise from bottom left a large vihuela (16-137a), harp, three-hole flute and struck zither, portative organ, vihuela de arco (16-140), and tambourine. On each side of the back of the throne on which St Vincent sits are finials of cherubs playing vihuelas de mano (16-138; 16-139).
