ARTWORK
The Museum’s catalogue describes this work as anonymous and dates it to the first half of the 16th century. Elsewhere it is described as a Spanish “mannerist” work which would date it more likely 1530-1580. It depicts “The Virgin with Child and San Juanito, accompanied by angels. Oil on wood panel. The Virgin seated, facing with the Child standing, beside her, and under him San Juanito, on the left; on the right, couple of angel musicians and before them basket with fruit. Buikldings in the background. Dimensions: 755 by 560 mm. Catalogue inventory number 08398. (Drawn from Emilio Camps Cazorla, Inventario del Museo Lázaro Galdiano (1949-1950).

INSTRUMENT
Small vihuela described in Wikimedia (erroneously) as a “soprano vihuela”. The body is unusual in theat the upper bout is wider than the lower, but this is almost certainly an error from the painter. The suond hole is in the centre of the doy and the bridge very close to the lower end. Few other features are clearly visible.
