Commentary
ARTWORK
‘Coronation of the Virgin’ by a painter of the Valencian School. Regarded as anonymous by some writers, some art historians have attributed the painting that includes this angel to be the work of the Maestro of San Lázaro. This is not confirmed, however. Woodfield dated the painting as early 16th century (woodfield1984), whereas Bordas suggests that it might be from the late 15th-century. The painting includes both a vihuela de mano and vihuela de arco 15-327b.
INSTRUMENT
A female angels is playing vihuela. It is a remarkable detailed image. The body has gently incurved waists and the sound hole is placed very high on the soundboard. There is a diamond-shaped decoration in the centre of body at join to neck. The flat bridge is also located very low on the soundboard. Seven strings are tied to the bridge. The body is very shallow and flat. It has a long neck with 6 double frets. The fingerboard has two broad dark strips on the sides, with a lighter strip in the middle. Return pegbox. Side pegs.
