ARTWORK

Juan de la Abadía, el viejo, active 1471-1498/1499 when he died (postHSP, vol. XII, part 2, pp. 706-708).

INSTRUMENT
Long-necked vihuela de mano with cornered waists, oval body, strings represented imprecisely. Plucked with fingers in thumb-in position, with forearm parallel to the strings, as in medieval plectrum style. Left-hand shows a chord grip using the thumb to stop strings as well as the fingers.
