schöner1999, p. 45 quotes Israel Adler (adlerPRA) that the vihuela was known in the Jewish community of Amsterdam in the early 17th century, that included many immigrants from Portugal. Schöner points to the Phalese publications of Valderrabano and Narvaez works, but it would seem to me just as probable that these instruments would have been used in connection with romances and songs from oral tradiiton.
