Juan de Horozco y Covarrubias, Emblemas morales 1604.

This is a new edition of the 1589 original. The original was issued in Segovia. This new edition was printed in Zaragoza. The woodcut for each of the emblems was made afresh, with the engraver making fairly accurate reproductions, but with numerous differences, nonethless. They require careful examination to distinguish them from the originals.

Emblema XXXI: Viendo la gente moça entrenida / en cantar y tañer con instrumentos / Thelemaco no quiere se despida / la música, ni dexen sus contentos. / Solo se aparta, porque aquella vida / es del tiempo que sigue otros intentos / Mas ya su edad de veras ocupada / de lo que es passatiempo está olvidada.

Emblema XXXIIII: Siendo Democles como Rey servido / y viendo el aparato y la riqueza / y el regalo que siempre avia entendido, / agradale en estremo la grandeza. / Mas quando vio la espada qu ha tenido / presa de un hilo sobre su cabeça, / Dexó el trono, diziendo, Rea que sea / quien no sabe lo que es y lo dessea.

The instruments depicted in the woodcut prints in this book are
1. vihuela de arco (played on the shoulder), lib. 2, emblema 30, fol. 59 — the instrument is not named in the text
2. guitar (vihuela?), lib. 2, emblema 31, fol. 61 - according to the texts, it depicts the ancient Greek Cythara of Thelemaco and Homer
3. ambiguous vihuela or lute, lib. 2 emblema 34, fol. 67 — instrument not mentioned in the text
4. harp, lib. 2, emblema 49, fol. 97
