A book of 12 stage plays. In one of the plays, Lo que puede la aprehensión, the dialogue shows the interchangeability of the terms “vihuela” and “guitarra” in seventeenth-century usage in Spanish.

LAURA: Al momento la traigo. (Vase Laura y vuelve con la guitarra)
DUQUESA: ¡Cortesana es como bella!
FENISA: Esto es para las almohadas.
DUQUESA: Donde quisiereis sea.
(Sale Laura)
LAURA: Y la guitarra está aquel.
COLMILLO: Lo mejor es que no templa
Ni hace gestos; Que hay algunos
Que cuando cantan se quedan
Como judio de paso,
Y cuando a un pasaje llegan,
Le comienzan en la boca
y le acaban en la oreja.
FENICIA (Canta)
Yo quiero bien / Y este amor de oiro se infiere; Que aunque yo soy la que quiere / No sé a quien.
COLMILLO: El Duque
FENICIA: ¡Ay cielos! No me halle con la vihuela
En la mano. Perdonad.

Corona1999, p. 48 comments: In this play, the lady Fenicia asks for a vihuela, but the stage direction runs: "Laura goes and comes back with the guitar" (vase Laura y vuelve con la guitarra), and Laura too describes the instrument as guitar. Some lines further on, another character enters with the news that the Duke has arrived; Fenicia does not want the Duke to see her playing, and returns the instrument to Laura saying: "Heavens!, do not let him find me with the vihuela in my hands" (Ay cielos! No me halle con la vihuela en la mano); another stage direction now states: "she puts the vihuela in the hands of the Duchess" (pone la vihuela en la mano de la Duquesa)
