Luis Venegas de Henestrosa, Libro de Cifra Nueva para Tecla, Harpa, y Vihuela.

A book of tablature supposedly invented by Venegas himself that became the basis of the most widespread Spanish keyboard notation in Spain during the 16th and 17th centuries. Part of Venegas’ purpose was to create a universal notation that could be used for all polyphonic instruments. He was especially aware of how much tablature was available for lute and vihuela in comparison to keyboards, so he arranged music by lutenist Francesco da Milano and vihuelists Narváez, Mudarra, Pisador and Valderrábano.

Contains arrangements of vihuela music (for keyboard) by Narváez, Mudarra and Valderrábano, that were first identified by John Ward (ward1952-1) as well as details about playing the vihuela. Venegas describes the lute as the “vihuela de Flandes” and two types of plicking technique: figueta española (thumb-out) and figueta extranjera (thumb-under). The list above is based upon Ward
