Antonio de Torquemada explains how the quality of the vihuelist determines the quality of interpretation, by comparing a good player and one who plays poorly, making the point that the listener’s impression of a work depends on the performance

Y si queréis ver un exenplo por donde mejor lo entendáis, veréis a un músico de vihuela tañer en ella una obra compuesta que os pareçerá lo más mal del mundo, y tomando otro músico la mesma obra entre manos y tañiéndola por los mesmos puntos y sin salir de lo que el primero, pensaréis que es la mejor música que se puede tañer en el mundo; esto procede de que el uno la tañió muy llanamente, sin ayre y sin conpás y sin apuntar las diferençias, atropellando la música con los dedos, de manera que apenas se entiende, y el otro la tañe clara y suave, señalando los compases, haciendo sus redobles a tiempos, heriendo paso o reçio las cuerdas para hazer vna música y suavidad muy diferente, así que al uno oímos con mucha voluntad y al otro taparíamos los oídos si pudiésemos [torquemada1994, vol. 1, pp. 33-34.

Antonio de Torquemada (Manual de escribentes, 1552) explains how a musical work for vihuela can cause very different impressions in the listeners, for the reason that, depending on the vihuela player who performs it, the same work will be judged as the best or the worst music in the world; the difference lies both in the performing style (the incompetent vihuela player performs the work ‘ordinarily without any sense of rhythm and measure’, whereas the skilled one performs it ‘clearly and gently’ with a sense of rhythm) and in the performing technique (the one ‘runs over the music with the fingers so that [the music] can be barely understood’, whereas the other performs redobles on time and plucks the strings properly.)
