Letter from Francesco Comparini, Mantuan Ambassador in Hungary, in May 1497 to Isabella d’Este written from Estergom.
The letter describes two “viole a l’o[n]garesca” which Comparini say could be altered to be “ala napoletana”. Even though it is difficult to gauge either the Hungarian or Neapolitan instrument on the basis of this description, it does show that Mantuans were familiar with the Neapolitan instrument and whatever gave it its distinct identity.
