Salazar (salazar1948, p. 268), says that Tinctoris considered the guitarra to be flat (ista vero plana) como una viola. What instrument is he talking about? Latin text. However, if it is the guitar, then it might relate to the period in which the term guitarra in Spain was changing from its older meaning of gittern, small lute, to the instruments that had formerly been cítolas and later vihuelas. Salazar cross references to the inventory of the instruments of Henry VIII of England which contain “four gitterns which are called Spanish vialls. (Pulwer, op cit. p. 94) Woodfield will probably refer to this quote. are they plucked or bowed?
