Biographical information

Pedro Tafur (Córdoba, c. 1410 - c. 1487), Castilian traveller and writer.

During the reign of Juan II de Castilla, he undertook a long journey that took him to three continents between 1436 y 1439,
eager to know the world and live out adventures, as he himself relates. Along the way he took part in battles, he went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land and undertook diplomatic work. Fifteen years later, he wrote a book called Andanças e viajes de Pero Tafur por diversas partes del mundo habidos (unpublished until 1874), which is one of the only travel books known in medieval Spain alongside that of Ruy González de Clavijo. Concerning this work, historiographers have underlined principally the documentary value of his description of the city of Rome and also the detail of his encounter with the Italian traveller Niccolò Da Conti.
