Biographical information

From bejarano2013-1, 520. Resident in the San Vicente quarter (collación) of Seville. This, together with the quarters of Santa María and Santa María Magdalena, were the areas where Seville’s violeros tended to live. Bernabé was married to Leonor Fernández. The were aparently a prosperous family, but through a number of inheritances. From Leonor’s will of 1571, it is known that Bernabé gave their daughter Beatriz Gutierrez “unas casas” in the Magdalena quarter as dos tercios of her dowry. These reverted to Leonor, the wife, following the death of Beatriz without offspring. He also paid 10,000 mrs to redeem a tributo that he had on these houses. Their son Cristóbal de Jerez died young, and it is not known whether he followed his father’s footsteps as a violero. [source: Sevilla, Biblioteca Capitular y Colombina, Fondo Gestoso, Manuscritos.
