Alonso de Zúñiga y Acevedo Fonseca was born around 1495 and died in 1559 in the castle of Monterrey in Verín (Orense). He was a noble from one of the leading noble families of the period, the Casa de Zúñiga. He was III Count of Monterrey, Lord of Biedma, Ulloa, of the house of Ribera, Principal verger of Santiago, and Adelantado Mayor of Cazorla. He served Charles V, accompanying him to his coronation in Bologna and he built the palace of Monterrey in Salamanca. He is presumably the Count of Monterrey whose estates in Galicia were administered by Alonso Pisador, the father of Diego. His book of Hours (preserved in El Escorial) includes a miniature of an angel playing a vihuela
