Jean de Rouen [João de Rouão in Portuguese] (Rouen, 1500-Portugal, 1580) was a scupltor and architect of French origin, active in Portugal between 1528 and 1580. He participated in the building of the Cathedral of Rouen and in 1518 established himself in Coimbra. He was an “artist of the elite, an intellectual” who occupied a key position in the introduction and consolidation of renaissance values in Portugal. Famous in his own time, his production is vast and notable, spread throughout the north of Portugal, centred around Coimbra where his workshop was located.
