Biographical information

Cristóbal de Castillejo (1494-1550), Diálogo y discurso de la vida en corte. c. 1540. Published in Las obras de Cristóbal de Castillejo. Corregidas y emendadas, por mandado del Consejo de la Santa Inquisición. Impressas con licencia y privilegio de su Magestad para los reynos de Castilla y Aragón. Madrid: Pierres Cosin, 1573.

Entered court service as a page at the court of Fernando el Católico at the age of 15. Travelled widely and spent much of his life in service of the German and Austrian Habsburg families.

Spanish poet of the Renaissance. As secretary to the king of Bohemia, Castillejo visited Vienna and other European cities. His poems are grouped under the titles Obras de amores [works of love] and Obras morales y de devoción [moral and devotional works]. His Diálogo de la vida de corte is a clever and perceptive picture of life at court. He championed the traditional Spanish as against the Italian verse form. (Columbia Encyclopedia 2004)
