Juan Enríquez is named in a document as a “vigolero”, in Lorca (Granada) in 1594. He was paid 6 reales on 21 June 1594 for participating in the Corpus Christi procession of the town, “dancing and playing”.

This raises the issue of whether he was also an instrument maker, or whether the term “violero” was also used for players of the instrument instead of exclusively meaning an instrument maker. There is no evidence the this “violero” was involved with making vihuelas.
