Biographical information

Vihuelist active at the Spanish royal court from June 1565 until 1569. Robledo writes with regard to the houselhold of Isabel de Valois, the la Casa de la Reina, that together with Fuenllana there were another two musicians at court who funcioned as a duo, the vihueist Juan Pietro and the singer Juan de Cortijo. (robledo2004, 37-38) , Judging by his name, he may have been of Italian origin. On 28 Jan. 1569 after Isabel’s death this “músico de vihuela, que fue de la reina nra sra (Isabel)” was paid 96,250 mrs. Corona-Alcalde refers to this musician with the surname Escalona.
