Biographical information

• 1585 - 21 February. In 1585 Juan de Aldaz, vihuelero, and Gómez Mexia, musician, made a contract in Madrid to buy thirty-four and a half bundles of vihuela strings with the trade name la aguela [sic] at fifteen reales a bundle. 517.5 reales (17.595 mrs) para 34 y medio mazos de cuerdas. [mazo = 100 cuerdas?]

• 1607 - 3 July. Violeros Diego Fernández and Cristóbal Bejerano swear on oath that Juan de Aldaz had been examined for a plain vihuela (una biguela llana) by Antonio Duarte and Juan de Carrión in 1586 and Juan de Aldaz was given a licence to have a shop. [AHPM, 3-07-1607, Prot: 24848, fol. 595]

• Juan de Aldaz was present at the meeting in 1607 that the violeros held at Alonso González’s house in calle Toledo (el oficio y arte de hacer biguelas y guitarras y otros instrumentos) to elect examiners and an overseer for the year 1608.
