Biographical information

A violero active in Valencia and Toledo, presumed son of violero Alonso de Guadalupe. Trained by his father, Juan appears to have been active in Valencia, later moving to Toledo when his family had to abandon their native city due to involvement in the Brotherhood uprisings (Germanías) in Valencia and the consequent confiscation of their home and possessions. In 1525 and presumably for a short time, he was in a partnership with Rodrigo de Ayllón. Reynaud proposes (reynaudPT, 406) that he could be the maker of the “Guadalupe” vihuela conserved in Paris that bears the name Guadalupe engraved on the pegbox (16-124) although Martínez and Sanchis both suggest that this instrument was made by his father. Romanillos and Harris reiterate Reynaud, that he “was associated for a brief period with the violero Rodrigo de Ayllón.” (romanillos2002, 168)
