reynaudPT, p. 404: In 1542 Juan de Portillo rents a shop from violero Diego de Medina for 1000 mrs and 3 pairs of chickens. Three years later (1545) he sublets from violero Alonso de Pineda , probably larger, for 3000 mrs/yr. In 1548, in company of Francisco Tofino, he is a guarantor to a lease by fellow violero Bernal de Mena. In 1553 he must have been at the height of his production. 1553.05.05 he buys 175 gross of fine strings of pig gut [25,200 strings] for vihuelas for 9000 mrs from merchant Juan de la Puebla which he will pay in three annual installments. [These strings would probably last for the 3-year period and average .36 mrs/string] In 1556 he owed 1125 mrs to the priest of the church of San Sebastián, Francisco Tofino is his guarantor. He died in 1566.
