Recent discoveries confirm earlier speculation that Enríquez de Valderrábano was in the service of the IV Conde de Miranda, Francisco de Zúñiga y Avellaneda, in Peñaranda del Duero in the souuth of the province of Burgos. He is the dedicatee of Silva de sirenas. Recent work by Gil (gil2017) draws together the existing information, while Aguirre and López have brought together new information about the palace at Peñaranda as well as biographical evidence. The count also had property in Valladolid and lived there several months of each year. It is likely that Valderrábano also accompanied the family between residences. The fact that the IV Conde Miranda’s mother was María Enríquez de Cárdenas raises the possibility that the vihuelist may have had some familial connection with the Count’s family.

• 1542 AGDV Parroquia de San Miguel, Bautizados, lib. 1º, fol 77v. 28 Feb 1542. A don Anrriquez de Valderrábano is among the godparents of Ana de Segovia, daughter of the weaver Mateo de Segovia. The documet reads [in the margin]: anna de Segobia. [Text]: en xxviii del dicho mes [= febrero] se xpañó [= cristianó] ana yja [=hija] de mateo de segobia, tejedor / los compadres y comadres / don anrriquez de valderrabano diego gonzaled de santiago [?] / escrivano maria de guzman muger de hernando de logroño / carpintero y Joana de Villegas muger de diego lopez de go. escribano
• 1544 “Fernando Henrriquez de Valderrabano, criado del dicho señor conde” was witness to the death of María Enríquez de Cárdenas, mother of the Count
• 1547 Silva de sirenas (Valladolid: Fernández de Córdoba, 1547)
• 1555 cited by Bermudo (berm1555, 29v).
• 1574 Melchor de Santa Cruz de Dueñas refers to a vihuelist named “Enrique Enriques” in his Floresta española de apotegmas, o sentencias sabia y graciosamente dichas de algunos españoles.
• 1575 was a witness to a candidate seeking a position in the Orden Militar de Santiago.
• 1580 “Anrriquez de Valderrábano signs a document in Peñaranda dated 1580.12.19. Probably as a witness.
• 1587 AHPV/prot/leg/409/894 “Inventario de los bienes de Diego de Tovar”, 1587.03.13: fol 903 has a list of his books which includes “libro de música de Anriquez -quatro reales”
• 1590 AHPV 1590.07.30 contains a document pertaining to “Fray Francisco de Valderrábano, hijo legítimo y natural del comendador Antonio de Valderrábano del horden y caballería de Santiago, morador en el convento de Nuestra Señora de la Victoria desta villa [=Valladolid], del orden de los Mínimos.” His father was also deceased, also from Valladolid, and his mother had remarried. This is the reason for the document. There is no indication of any family connection with the vihuelist at this stage.
• 1615 Cristóbal Suárez de Figeroa, Plaza universal (Madrid, 1615) praises Valderrábano (cited in robledo1989)
• 1868 Saldoni erroneously cites him as "natural de Peñacerrada (León)" - instead of of Peñaranda? f/193v
• 1918 Pedrell published songs by Valderrábano (pedrell1918 III, nºs 57-60)
• 1988 Barbieri, Vol 2, doc 2838. Letter reports a 7th copy of Valderrábano, 20,000 reales (casares1988)
• 2019 Gracia Gil informs: “Lo siguiente que me ocupa es la sospecha de que los padres de Valderrábano formaban parte de la corte de la reina Isabel de Portugal. Hay un Antonio de Valderrábano en la lista de sus criados. Lo encontré en Simancas. Se sabe que Isabel mantuvo a los capellanes y criados de su difunta madre, entre las que se hay una tal "Catalina de Sarabia, esposa del comendador Valderrábano". En la misma casa trabajaba María Enríquez de Cárdenas, esposa del III Conde de Miranda y el mismo tercer Conde fue paje del príncipe Juan.
Estando los condes de Miranda y los Valderrábano en el mismo sitio, se educarían el IV Conde y nuestro Enríquez juntos, lo cual explicaría un montón de cosas, pero aún tengo un vacío que debo rellenar y demostrar.”
• 2022 Private communication from Gracia Gil to John Griffiths in 2022 suggests that Valderrábano may have come from the court at Arévalo.
