Biographical information

Prince Juan (1478-1497), son of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabel, is reputed to have loved music, to have learned to play various instruments including the vihuela, and to have had a collection of musical instruments in his chambers. The maib source for this is Fernández de Oviedo, Libro de la Cámara real, presented to Charles V in 1548, but written c. 1490. It is the oldest document to use the term “vihuela de mano” [fdzoviedoC2006] The text is given in Document D0397. This document refers to him owning the first claviorgano known in Spain, organs, clavichords, vihuelas de mano, vihuelas de arco and wind instruments. He also claims that Juan could play them all. Knighton 2016-2, p. 102, tells that a large vihuela was acquired for el principe Juan in 1490, quoting from Torre1955, I: 372
