This is the first of the two solo settings of variations on the Pavana in Valderrábano’s book. The other follows immediately after in the book, va165. The scheme is the proto-folia ‘pavana’ scheme that is given in oplain form by Pisador as his “Pavana muy llana” the same scheme used by Ortiz and other instrumental composers. The piece is crafted with some eququisite counterpoint and is not simply a set of virtuoso variations.
