This soneto is a direct quotation from a ricercar by Francesco da Milano (Ness No 13). All but the last two and a half bars are a direct quote of bars 1-32 of Francesco’s work, with a few minor changes of left hand fingering and ficta. It represents the first half of the Francesco ricercar which has a total of 72 bars. The concordance was discovered by John Robinson and brought to my attention by Arthur Ness, 18 Sep 1994. This piece is edited as Soneto XX in Pujol’s edition (pujol1965).
