One of the best known works from Valderrábano’s anthology, the origins of this piece in triple time remain unknown. Its title of “soneto” indicates that Valderrábano also was not sure of its provenance and used the term “soneto” in the sense of “piece” without any implication that it may have had a vocal origin. Pujol suspected it may have been derived from a dance, but this is speculation based on phrasing. and style. In Pujol’s edition, this piece is Soneto VIII (pujol1965).
