Commentary

Rubric: “Fantasia. Mode 4. Third level [of difficulty]”. A free fantasia suelta of 114 compases opening and closing with some imitiation, therefore of the type imitative–free–imitative. Begins with successive voice entries of an initial theme (theme 1), then with further voice entries barely resembling the opening. It proceeds as free counterpoint until c.94 where theme 2 is the uppermost voice of a harmonic network which is treated sequentially before a final coda. There are relatively few internal cadences. Reprinted and reworked by Venegas de Henestrosa [1557/2, nº 63]. See ward1953 concerning the reworking. Venegas transcribes the pieces as though it were for a vihuela in E, but this gives a trnascription requiring two flats in the signature, effectively mode 4 transoposed to G. The piece seems to be most satisfactorily accommodated on a vihuela in F#, with the mode transposed. Untransposed, it would require a vihuela in C# for the final chord to finish on E, the modal final.
