Rubric: “Here follow two fantasias that imitate the motet Queramus cum pastoribus. Third level [of difficulty]”. The entry in the table of contents further suggests that each of the fantasias might draw from the prima and secunda pars of the motet. This fantasia is a parody on Mouton’s setting of the motet. Ward sums up the work well: “The fantasia begins like a glosa of Mouton’s popular motet, with many pasos, but changes to a free paraphrase and then to a new music composed with fragments of the model” (ward1953, 235). The distribution of material is as follows:
1-19 glosa
20-29 paraphrase
30-96 free
34-36 free adaptation
52-55 quote with added passing notes.
The free music is non-imitative. Polyphony of varied texture from homophony to counterpoint to redobles.
Theme 1 = incipit; 2 = imitated favorite theme.
