Commentary

Rubric: “This fantasia is composed upon a certain part of the Missa Ave maris stell by Josquin. Mode 1. Third level [of difficylty].” A parody fantasia on an undisclosed portion of Josquin’s mass. The entry in the table of contents is no more explicit, although he does specify that it is only based on “algunos pasos” [a few bits].It is, in addition, a lengthy fantasia of 198 compases.

Ward’s shows c. 129-131and 153-162 to be based on semibreves 1-9 of the Kyrie Postrero, and acknowledges that Valderrabano only says “algunos pasos” and “de cierta parte de la misa” (Ward1953). The first of these passages is the beginning of a new section of the work and its theme, Theme 4 (130 ff), extends the Kyrie Postrero quote. Textures make work hang together. Lyrical. Rhythmic imitation in free polyphony is quite important – answers to questions. Variety of textures. Theme 1 = incipit; themes 2+3 are motives which make several appearances.
