Rubric: “This fantasia that follows is in the first mode. Third grade [of difficulty]. This is what Valderrabano describes as a “fantasia suelta,” a free-form, work not based on pre-existing material. It is through-composed with some imitation, a long work of 169 compases. It has fewer interrupted cadences than in the preceding work (va092) – part of the marked difference in mode. here mode 1 transposed to G.
The fantasia begins with imitations of brisk motivic theme 1 > free extension to K at 12 > S then B oriented free phrases to full K at 22. A new section is introduced briefly by stretto of motive 2 to Phrygian K at 28 > long treble dominated section to 52. > With the texture reduced, there is a new beginning expanding to a section of shorter phrases occurring in a quite regular alternation between the two outer voices, with a cadence at 85. > Treble domination until 96 where theme 3 is introduced in S > B > A and then free counterpoint of continually shifting emphasis, generally with one voice leading a theme, and little redobles interwoven along the way. The range of the S corresponds to mode 2.
