Source title [vihuela 1]: Adriano. Vihuela mayor. Por que se ha puesto music en vnisonus/y en tercera /y en quarta se pone en quinta/ ha do se requiere que esta vihuela mayor sea grande / y la menor muy pequeña / por que assi conuiene al temple: y por mas claro la quinta en vaio desta vihuela mayor ha de sonar octaua debaxo de la quarta en vazio de la vihuela menor. Esta es una cancion a seys. Segundo grado. Intabulation of a six-voice chanson by Adrian Willaert for two vihuelas at the fifth. Valderrábano lists this piece as “Sibivit” but corresponds to Adrian Willaert’s chanson “Or suis-je bien au pire”. The rubric for the Vihuela mayor reads: “Just as music has been given for vihuelas in unison, at the third, and fourth, it is also put at the fifth, and so it is necessary that this vihuela be large, and the lesser one small, because that is what suits the tuning: and to make it clearer, the open fifth course of this large vihuela has to sound an octave below the open fourth course of the small vihuela. This is a chanson in six voices. Second grade.” The rubric for the lesser vihuela says “Here follow the music at the fifth, as with the larger vihuela beter it is explained, with which this tuning concludes all the music for two vihuelas”. Willaert composed a three-part setting of the work published in 1536 in La couronne et fleur des chansons (No.2) (Rome, Antico)—available on IMSLP. The six-voice version was first printed thirteen years after Valderrábano’s book in the Livre de meslanges: contenant six vingtz chansons, des plus rares, et plus industrieuses quise trouvent, soit des autheurs antiques, soit des plus memorables de nostre temps, composées à cinq, six, sept & huit parties, en six volumes.
