Commentary

An intabulation for two vihuelas at the fourth of the “Cum sancto spirito” section from the “Gloria” of Cristóbal Morales, Missa De beata virgine. In the MME edition of the model, this section commences at bar 174. In the tablature version, the Cantus, Altus, and Tenor voices are played by the higher vihuela (in D) with the Quintus and Bass voices on the lower instrument (in A). The rubric states succenictly: [vihuela 1]: Morales. Large vihuela. This tuning is as for the previous piece, at the fourth. First grade. Cum sancto spiritu. [vihuela 2]: Small vihuela.” Schöner argues for the Dorico print as a possible model as there is evidence of large numbers of this book being imported to Spain (schoner1999, 134-135.), however, Valderrábano’s setting reproduces an important error from the 1540 Scotto edition.
For more information on the vocal model, see: Anglés, Morales, Opera Omnia III, Texto, 35; Lewis, Gardano (lewis1992, 589); Pogue, Jacques Moderne (pogue 1969, 202); Stevenson, Cathedral Music (stevenson1961, 72); Schöner (1999), 216-217. There are many more copies of the vocal model than those listed below. The additional copies of the polyphony include: Cividale del Friuli, Museo Archeologio, MS 53; Madrid, Biblioteca Medinaceli, MS 607; Reggio Emilia, Archivio della Parrocchia S. Prospero Città, MS, sin sign.; Rostock, Universitätsbibliothek, MS Mus. 40; Stuttgart, Württembergische Landesbibliothek, MS. I.28; Vatican, Cappella Sistina, MS 19.
