Commentary

Intabulation of a motet by Jacquet of Mantua published in his first book of motets issued by Scotto in Venice in 1539. Uses the unusual tuning of a vihuela in F#, presumably in order to make the work fit well onto the vihuela. The result is a work of considerably technical difficulty for the instrumentalist. The motet seems to be in mode 3, untransposed, although it ends on the repercussio A. The text is drawn from Psalm 50, verses 8-9, concluding with verse 1.

Song Text

Tibi soli peccavi et malum coram te feci
Ecce enim iniquitatibusconceptus sum
et in peccatis concepit me mater mea
Miserere mei Deus secundum magnam misericordium tuam
et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum dele iniquitatem meam.

To you only have I sinned and done evil in your sight
For behold I am conceived in iniquities
and in sin my mother conceived me
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
