Commentary

Intabulation of a motet attributed to Loyset (surname not given) setting the Ave Maria text. No other source of this piece is known. Valderrábano’s rubric reads: “Fourth course on the third fret is the c clef, and the sixth course sixth fret of the where there is a sign is where the contrabass in canon with the voice in red notes which is to be sung”. This implies the rather unusual tuning of the vihuela in B. The fifth voice, the canonic bass, is realised in the tablature version. Loyset Compère and Loyset Pieton are among the likely composers. Finscher/Pietschmann in MGG2 attribute this intabulation to Pieton.
