Commentary

Valderrábano’s intabulation of a motet by Gombert, the secunda pars of Fuit homo missus (intablutated by Pisador = Pi069), another of the works that were printed in the 1532 Motteti del Fiore by Moderne. It is for the feast of John the Baptist. An instrumental setting is in Coimbra MS 48, fol. 41v-42. The intabulation corresponds closely to the vocal polyphony.

Song Text

Hic precursor et dilectus
et lucerna lucens ante dominum
ipse est enim Joannes
qui vian domino preparauit in heremo
fuit in deserto predicans et baptizans
baptismum penitentie

This is the well-beloved Fore-runner,
a shining light before the Lord.
For even this is John,
who made straight in the desert an highway for our God
He went into the desert preaching and baptising
baptising their penance
