Commentary

This is an intabulation of an unidentified motet setting of the “Si bona suscepimus”, a responsory from the Office of the Dead, based on two verses from the book of Job. RISM lists over 120 settings (from all periods). To this point the model remains unidentified. Gil erroneously gives the source as Moderne’s Motteti del fiore. Secundus liber, but this work is not in that collection (Gil2017, 373). Among the versions that can be excluded are the four-voice settings by Sermisy, Clemens non Papa and Costanzo Porta as well as the settings by Verdelot (5vv) and Gombert (6vv). The heading at the top of the page indicating “Gombert” probably applies to his setting of “O gloriosa Dei genetrix” [va009] that concludes at the top of the page.

Song Text

[Job 2:10]
Si bona suscepimus de manu Domini,
mala autem quare non sustineamus?
[Job 1:21]
Nudus egressus sum de utero matris meae, et nudus revertar illuc.
Dominus dedit, Dominus abstulit; sicut Domino placuit, ita factum est:
sit nomen Domini benedictum.

If we have received good things from the hand of the Lord,
why should we not endure bad things?

Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there.
The Lord has given, the Lord has taken away: as it has pleased the Lord, so is it done:
blessed be the name of the Lord.
