This work, the first in the Libro segundo, is an intabulation of a motet setting by Francesco de Layolle of the Vespers psalm “Laudate Dominum” (Ps 116).. Valderrábano’s rubric indicates “The C clef is located on the the third course on the first fret, meaning that the first red cipher is an A.” The secunda pars of the moter is the doxology. This version is apparently the unique source of this setting and does not correspond to the setting indicated by Brown (BrownI, 100), Firenze: Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale: I-Fn Ms Magl. XIC, 117, nº33 (gil2017, 372). On the basis of the cadences and the tenor range, the work appears to conform to mode 2 more than mode 1.
Laudate Dominum omnes gentes
Laudate eum, omnes populi
Quoniam confirmata est
Super nos misericordia eius,
Et veritas Domini manet in aeternum.
Gloria Patri et Filio et Spiritui Sancto.
Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper.
Et in saecula saeculorum.
Amen.
Praise the Lord, all nations;
Praise Him, all people.
For He has bestowed
His mercy upon us,
And the truth of the Lord endures forever.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and forever,
and for generations of generations.
Amen.
