An “Agnus Dei” intabulation from an unidentified cantus firmus Mass. No Missa mi fa re sol fa mi has yet been identified, nor any chant from which the solfa syllables may have been taken. (Va003 & Va005 are from the same mass, possibly Va004 as well). At the beginning of the piece Valderrábano writes: “Here follow certain sections of music on plainchant, most beneficial. This first one is in three voices, the cantus firmus should be sung; it is given in red figures, and to understand the notes [solfa], on the third course first fret the C clef is shown both singing and playing mi-fa-re-sol-fa-mi and then the cantus firmus is repeated, with variation.”
The music comprises two statements of the cantus firmus, in the middle voice of the three with the outer voices taking turns in moving ifaster passage work. Each note of the cantus firmus is repeated over four compases. It is preceded by a four compas introduction, two compases of rest between the two statements, and a prolongation of five compases at the end.
